Wolves Can’t Complete Comeback
The Sudbury Wolves fell Sunday afternoon to the Oshawa Generals by a score of 4-2. The Wolves played hard and deserved a better outcome, but scored only once on nine powerplay chances in the loss. Goaltender TROY TIMPANO made his return to the Wolves’ lineup after being out since October 9th with an injury.
The Wolves played a very strong opening period, but were unable to beat Oshawa’s goaltender Logan Gauthier. They sustained pressure in the Oshawa zone multiple times and carried the majority of the play, but could not catch a break. Timpano played well in his return stopping all 9 shots he faced in the first period, including a shorthanded break from Anthony Cirelli. The Wolves closest chance came on a breakaway by MICHAEL PEZZETTA, but he could not beat the Generals goaltender. After the 1st, shots on goal were 11-9 in favour of the Wolves.
It was a special teams battle in the 2nd period as Lukas Lofquist opened the scoring on the powerplay to give the Generals the lead. Shortly after, the Wolves were on the powerplay, but it was the Generals’ getting on the board again as Anthony Cirelli scored on a shorthanded breakaway to give the Generals a 2-0 lead. Later in the period, the Wolves were given a 5-minute powerplay, but were unable to convert any of their scoring chances. The Wolves were finally able to solve the Generals goalie when ZACH WILKIE scored shorthanded to cut the lead in half. COLE MAYO picked up the assist on the Wolves’ opening goal. After 40 minutes, the Wolves continued to lead in shots 25-16.
Special teams continued to be a theme in the final period of play. Early in the period TIMPANO made another big save on a Generals breakaway to keep the Wolves deficit to one. The Wolves tied the game up on the powerplay when KYLE CAPOBIANCO fired a shot from the point even up the game at two. DMITRY SOKOLOV and MICHAEL PEZZETTA picked up the assists on the powerplay marker. The Generals took the lead on a late powerplay opportunity, which turned out to be the game winner. They also added an insurance goal with an empty-net marker to close out the victory. Final shots were 35-28 in favour of Sudbury.
The Wolves next home game is Friday, December 11th, 2015 against the London Knights at 7pm. Don’t miss out on the annual Teddy Bear Toss.
