Wolve Fall to Sting to Close Out Home Stand
The Sudbury Wolves dropped the final game of their opening four-game home stand 5-2 against the Sarnia Sting Sunday afternoon. David Levin scored his team leading third goal of the season, but the Wolves were unable to recover after allowing three goals in the 1st period.
The game did not start the way the Wolves planned. After missing an early scoring chance, Sarnia carried the play for the majority of the 1st period. The Sting scored three goals in the period to lead 3-0 after twenty minutes of play. After the 1st, shots were 18-7 in favour of the Sting.
The 2nd period was much improved for the Wolfpack. Early in the second, DAVID LEVIN opened the scoring for the Wolves. PATRICK MURPHY and PAVEL JENYS picked up the assists on the play. Sarnia was able to quickly answer, as Noah Bushnell buried a rebound for the Sting to put them back up by three. The Wolves continued to apply pressure and fight their way back into the game. Late in the period, MATT SCHMALZ fought off the Sarnia defender to feed DANNY DESROCHERS for his first goal of the year, trimming the lead to 4-2. The Wolves almost scored again, but Sarnia’s goalie, Justin Fazio, made a huge save to shut the door. At the end of two, the Sting were outshooting the Wolves 27-17.
The Wolves could not close the gap in the third period despite outshooting their opposition. They had some excellent chances, but once again, Justin Fazio made a number of big saves for the Sting. Troy Lajeunesse scored his hat-trick goal to seal it for Sarnia. The Wolves were unable to take advantage of six powerplays in the game, while the Sting were 1 for 4. Final shots were 34-29 in favour of Sarnia.
The Wolves head on the road next weekend, visiting London, Sarnia, and Kitchener. They will return to the confines of the Sudbury Arena on Friday, October 16th when they host the North Bay Battalion.
