Wolves Acquire Ewles, Klinkhammer and Nine Draft Picks
(Greater Sudbury ON) – The Sudbury Wolves announce that they have completed a trade with the Flint Firebirds with the resumption of the OHL trade period.
The Wolves acquire defenceman Gavin Ewles and forward Daks Klinkhammer along with nine future OHL draft picks in exchange for Wolves overage forward Evan Konyen, overage defenceman Nolan Collins, defenceman Matthew Mania and the rights to Josh Colosimo.
“We are very excited to add a couple of players with OHL experience,” said Sudbury Wolves VP & General Manager Rob Papineau. “Gavin Ewles is a player who we have highly regarded since his draft year, possesses good size, physical strength, excellent skating, and makes a strong first pass. He is a great team player. Daks Klinkhammer is a big, strong skating forward who brings energy and leadership to the team. Zacharie Giroux praised Daks highly as a teammate, noting his competitive spirit and character. Daks has strong Sudbury connections, with both his parents hailing from here.”
“Additionally, acquiring nine draft picks, many of which are high picks, is crucial for our future. We now have seven second round picks and six third round picks over the next four years,” Papineau added.
Gavin from Barrie ON, the 6’1, 192 lbs. right-shot defender was selected by Ottawa in the fifth round of the 2021 OHL Priority Selection. He went on to play 85 games for the 67’s prior to joining the Firebirds where he played 29 games. Gavin has 8 goals and 20 assists along with a +7 plus/minus rating over 114 career OHL games.
Daks Klinkhammer was selected by the Firebirds’ sixth round of the 2021 OHL Priority Selection. The 6’, 192 lbs. forward from Ajax ON, made his OHL debut on Oct. 7th, 2022, and has gone on to play two seasons with Flint playing 89 OHL games.
Papineau expresses, “trading players who have been with us for so long is always tough, with the overage rules only allowing us to play three overage players, we wanted to get ahead of this early in the summer and find a good opportunity for both Evan and Nolan. They are two outstanding players and individuals from wonderful families. We wish them both a great season with Flint next year and thank them for being excellent Sudbury Wolves and contributors to our community.” Papineau adds, “We also extend our gratitude to Matthew for his contributions to our team and wish him continued success in his future endeavours.”
“Today, we are making important moves to strengthen our team and position ourselves for a deep run this season,” said Sudbury Wolves Owner & Governor Dario Zulich. “I am fully aligned with and supportive of Rob Papineau’s strategic decisions. Together, we are committed to building a winning program. Our shared goal is clear: to go deep into the playoffs and bring home a championship. The Wolves are united in our pursuit of excellence, and I have every confidence in our team’s potential and direction.”
The Sudbury Wolves would like to thank Evan, Nolan, and Matthew for their dedication to the club and wish them nothing but the best in Flint.
