Storming the Olympics
Less than five years later, former Guelph Storm players Ryan Callahan and Drew Doughty will be pulling on the colours of the United States and Canada at the Winter Olympics.
“I remember telling my dad after a couple of games during training camp in 2005 that this Doughty kid is something special. I knew he’d end up in the NHL,” Callahan said this week in a phone interview.
“He was a great captain. I was a lot younger than him and didn’t say much, but he was a great leader and a great player,” Doughty said of Callahan, also over the phone this week.
Callahan, a 24-year-old Rochester, N.Y. native, is now a point-producing assistant captain with the New York Rangers. Doughty, a 20-year-old London native, is already considered one of the best in the business, patrolling the blue-line for the Los Angeles Kings.
The two will play each other Feb. 21 in Vancouver in the preliminary round at the Olympics.
