Storm wins battle of Czech mates
Storm goaltender Matej Machovsky made 38 saves while Ottawa 67’s counterpart and countryman Petr Mrazek made just 14 in a 6-4 Guelph win at the Sleeman Centre.
Machovsky, 17, and Mrazek, 18, grew up just 20 minutes apart in the Czech Republic.
“I’ve known him a long time,” Machovsky said. “He’s a good goalie. It was just a bad day for him.”
Mrazek let in a couple of early softies, including one by Michael Latta from a terrible angle just 27 seconds into the game.
Machovsky was much better. Two of the goals he allowed were on the power play and a third was tipped in.
“For the first five minutes I was very nervous. I was wearing new pads and in warm up I couldn’t stop pucks,” Machovsky said. “But it seems that when I have a bad warm up I have good games.”
Guelph was outshot 42-20.
With first-string goaltender Brandon Foote out of the lineup with a wounded wing, Sunday made it two straight games the Storm has gotten outstanding performances from its back-ups. Friday it was Garret Sparks earning the win.
