Storm Draft Flashbacks… 2006
The 2012 OHL Priority Selection will be conducted online on Saturday, April 7. With the sixth choice of the draft, Guelph Storm GM and Vice President Mike Kelly along with his scouting staff will certainly have the opportunity to add an elite player to the club for what looks like an exciting season in 2012-13.
GuelphStorm.com looks back at OHL Priority Selections in team history including several that were headed by Kelly during his last tenure with the Storm.
2006 OHL PRIORITY SELECTION
Looking only at the combined CHL totals of the 18 players selected by Dave Barr in the 2006 OHL Priority Selection and it was a better than average draft. In total the day 8 different players went on to play in the OHL, skating in 1,319 career regular season games and collecting 473 points. However, it was a much different philosophy for the Storm than the club’s earlier days as only one prospect went on to play his entire career in a Storm uniform.
Each of the club’s first five picks in 2006 was eventually dealt. Only Tyler Carroll spent his entire junior career in Guelph. The Strathroy native finished with 43 goals and 94 points in 203 games.
First pick Anthony Nigro and fifth round selection Travis Gibbons were later packaged in a deal that brought Michael Latta to the Royal City.
To date, none of the players taken in 2006 has played in the NHL. With four players still playing NCAA hockey as of 2011-12, only Nigro is playing in the American Hockey League with an outside shot at one day cracking an NHL lineup.
