Thursday night at the Sleeman Centre, the frustration level peaked for the Storm as they battled back from one goal deficits twice before finally surrendering three unanswered in the third period in a 5-2 loss. Down 1-0 in the first, Guelph looked to tie it on two occasions only to see the goal waved off. While Cody McNaughton’s disallowed goal raised little protest, an earlier tally by Tanner Richard that crossed the goal line before being pulled back by Scott Wedgewood was the wrong call. Despite the setbacks, the Storm fought back for a third time to finally notch a goal that counted and even the score at one. Tom Wilson gave the visitors the 1-0 lead before Zack Mitchell buried a pretty feed by Tanner Richard to make it 1-1 after twenty.
While the Storm owned a 14-7 edge in shots on goal in the first, the Whalers turned it around in the second as they fired 18 shots on Garret Sparks compared to eight by Guelph. Dario Trutmann with a point shot through traffic on the powerplay pushed Plymouth back on top only 66 seconds into the second. The lead was short-lived however as McNaughton found the back of the net again – and this time it counted. Jason Dickinson started the play with some nifty stickhandling before finding McNaughton streaking in on a line change. The Storm veteran wristed a high shot at the net that Wedgewood got a piece of but not enough.
In the third, the Whalers struck three times including a second powerplay goal. Mitchell Heard scored the game winner off a stretch pass through the neutral zone that caught the Storm defence flat footed. Heard, who was the game’s first star, slid in all alone and beat Sparks short side to make it 3-2. Alex Aleardi added a pair of goals including a back breaker that happened moments after a missed high sticking penalty in front of the Whalers’ goal. The speedy forward capitalized on the blown call and used his speed and a nice finish to give Plymouth their first two goal advantage. With three minutes to play, Aleardi scored his second to round out the scoring.
Saturday night, the Storm will travel to Plymouth looking to rebound from back-to-back losses. One night later, Guelph will host the Whalers on Sunday evening at 6:30 pm in Game Six.
