Posa makes immediate impact with Storm
By Tony Saxon, Guelph Mercury
When Saverio Posa was trade to the Guelph Storm last week his dad couldn’t have been happier.
Victor Posa, a former OHLer who had a lengthy minor pro career that culminated with a cup of coffee in the NHL, doesn’t have any ties with the Royal City. He just liked the way the Storm plays the game.
The younger Posa played his first two with his new team on the weekend, playing steady in Friday’s win over the Barrie Colts then picking up two assists in a 4-1 win over the Kingston Frontenacs Sunday at the Sleeman Centre.
“There were rumours I was going to either Kitchener or Guelph,” Posa said of the trade that saw him come to Guelph after three years with the Windsor Spitfires.
“When I came here my dad said it was the best place for me. He had seen Guelph play and knew they were a team that worked really, really hard.”
It is also a team that lets Posa spread his wings somewhat. Mainly a stay-at-home defenceman in Windsor, he is encouraged to join the rush in Guelph.
“It fits my style of play better,” the 5-foot-10, 180-pound Michigan native said.
“In Windsor I was strictly a defensive player. Here it’s such a change, joining in on the rush more.”
Despite playing three years with the Spits and winning a Memorial Cup with them in 2010, Posa knew the writing was on the wall as the trade deadline neared.
“Windsor is gearing up for a Memorial Cup run next year and I understood fully what they were doing,” he said. “I thank them for giving me the opportunity and sending me to a team for a playoff run. I feel blessed to have the chance to play with a great team.”
