Petes edge Storm in shootout
by Matt Pelkey
Another shootout, a different result.
Noah Carroll’s career-best three-point game nor Michael Giugovaz’s 35-save performance were enough to lift the Guelph Storm over the Peterborough Petes as the Storm dropped a 4-3 shootout decision Sunday afternoon at the Sleeman Centre.
It was the second straight game that Guelph had gone to a shootout.
For the Storm, Carroll had a goal and two assists, Hotchkiss had a goal and assist of his own and Givani Smith scored with 4:49 to send the game to overtime.
The loss snapped a three-game win streak for Guelph, who are now 2-1 in shootouts this season. The win was Peterborough’s first in five tries in the shootouts.
It wasn’t until there was 4:19 left in the opening period that the game’s first goal was scored.
On a solid breakout by the Storm led by Luke Burghardt, Burghardt chipped the puck to his right to a speeding Carroll who was flying down the right wing. Carroll released a wrist shot that hit off the far post and into the net for his first goal of the season to give Guelph a 1-0 lead.
The home team’s lead was short-lived, though.
A mere 1:55 later, Peterborough tied the game when Logan DeNoble received a pass in the slot from former Storm player Hunter Garlent and beat Giugovaz five-hole.
Then, with just 1:05 remaining in the first period, Steven Lorentz emerged from behind net the Guelph net with the puck, spun and shot to put the puck by Giugovaz short-side over his glove to give the Petes a 2-1 lead heading into the second.
It didn’t take long for the Storm to knot things up in the second period.
On a Guelph power play, James McEwan put the puck on netwith a shot from the right half-boards where Hotchkiss was in position to put the rebound through the legs of former Storm goaltender Matthew Mancina.
Early in the final frame, the Petes regained the lead.
A point-shot from Dominik Masin stopped by the right pad of Giugovaz left a rebound for Garlent who made no mistake and put it into a wide open net to make it 3-2 for Peterborough.
With only 4:49 to go in the game, Guelph tied the score once again.
With Carroll carrying the puck down the right wing and heading towards the back of the Petes’ net, he threw the puck out front to an open Smith who one-timed the puck low past Mancina’s blocker to make it 3-3 and send the game to overtime.
After a scoreless overtime period, the contest headed to a shootout where Lorentz scored the lone goal to win it for Peterborough, 4-3.
Giugovaz finished with 35 saves while Mancina turned away 25 shots.
Final shots were 38-28 for Peterborough.
The Storm are back in action on Thursday, January 21 when they head north for a three-game road trip starting with a visit in North Bay with the Battalion. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
