Milestone magic for McNaughton
Storm forward Cody McNaughton tied Kevin Dallman’s mark for most career regular season games (268) with the Storm and did it with style as he notched a hat trick to spark a 7-2 win over the Mississauga Steelheads.
Playing in his 268th game in a Storm uniform, the Petawawa native enjoyed one of his most memorable as he electrified a standing room only crowd of nearly 4,700 fans. The home side jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Chadd Bauman notched his first career OHL goal on a point shot through a Justin Auger screen. After the Steelheads evened the score, McNaughton restored the cushion with a perfect blast from the top of the circle. Before the end of the period, Auger picked up his second point of the night and the eventual game winner to make it 3-1 after one.
Robby Fabbri with a slick individual effort pushed Guelph ahead by three then McNaughton held off a Mississauga defender down low to bang in his second of the evening at 5:25 of the middle stanza. The Steelheads stopped the Storm run at four unanswered with a powerplay strike late in the second sending the game to the break with a 5-2 Guelph advantage.
The Storm didn’t let up in the third as they owned an 11-7 shots on goal advantage thanks largley to a Steelheads implosion that left them shorthanded for the last half of the frame. Brock Beukeboom posted his first of the season and first in a Guelph uniform on a four-on-four then McNaughton put home his third of the night on the man advantage to cap off a 7-2 final.
Tomorrow night, the Storm will travel to Erie to face the Otters in a tough Midwest matchup. Four days later, it will be Guelph’s first ever morning game as they travel to Mississauga for an 11 am school day start at the Hershey Centre. Then next Friday night, it will be the first of two in two nights at the Sleeman Centre. The Otters featuring 15 year old ‘phenom’ Connor McDavid will visit on Friday night, with the Ottawa 67’s coming to town one night later for a Saturday night home game for the Storm.
