Host families, commonly known as “billet families”, are essential for the success of our student-athletes both on and off the ice. With Storm players coming from across Ontario, part of the United States and Europe, our host families provide the comfort and stability that our players need to navigate an intensive hockey and academic schedule. Storm players range in age from 16-20 and will attend high school or a post-secondary institution while with the team.
We take great care in making sure to establish the best possible match for our players and their host family, with the goal that the player fit right in and be treated as another member of the family. The experience can be very rewarding, and has the potential to establish a life-long relationship between a player and his ‘billet family’.
It’s important to note the principles of success that we outline for our players at the rink and in the classroom will extend to their ‘billet’ home. Our players MUST respect the rules of their host family, and the host family must recognize the team’s core values and structure.
Accommodation Requirements
- Double bed or bigger, per player – a good mattress is essential
- Dresser and closet space
- Players must have their own room; they may not share a room with a host family member or a teammate
- Towels and shower supplies are the responsibility of the host family
- Laundry is usually done by the host family
- Dry cleaning is the responsibility of the player
- Parking space for the player (if the player has a car)
- Internet access, as well as a proper workspace for studying/homework
** Our top priority is the safety of our players, so please note that successful applicants must complete a background check with the Guelph Police Service.
*** Host Families are offered a weekly stipend to help offset the costs of welcoming one of our players into their home. They also receive two Storm season seats, which include all of the additional benefits of being a Storm Season Seat Holder.
If your family is interested in becoming a host family or would like more information, please complete the information form below.
