Carroll named the Co-opertors Community Hero
The Guelph Storm and The Co-operators announced that Tyler Carroll, is the winner of The Co-operators Community Hero Award. The 20 year old Storm forward accepted this award prior to the home game on Wednesday night versus the Kitchener Rangers.
On hand to make the presentation at Wednesday’s game was Darren Scott, a local Co-operators agent. Darren also presented a donation to Jon Jurus, Chair of the Guelph Wish Fund – Tyler’s charity of choice. The Guelph Wish Fund for Children granted its first “wish” in May 1985. A more recent “wish” was in April 2010. To date, the charity has raised over 2.5 million dollars, and has been involved with 245 children and their families. Some of the children’s “wishes” have been for assistance to make treatments a little easier. Others have required a lot more work and planning. All have been worth the joy and hope brought to the “wish” kids and their families.
Each season The Co-operators is proud to recognize one Guelph Storm player for his outstanding community involvement with The Co-operators Community Hero Award. Tyler Carroll was selected to be the recipient after volunteering more than 100 hours this season, and participating in the live free campaign, demonstrating a strong commitment to his community.
Tyler was instrumental this season in the continued development and success of the Guelph Storm’s Score and Read to Succeed programs as well as helping to implement the new Fun Fit Campaign. The Storm forward visited elementary schools several times each week delivering positive messages about the importance of education, involvement in the community, taking advantage of all possible opportunities, respect, excellence and anti-bullying. He also educated the youth of Guelph and surrounding communities on the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle.
The 20-year old also spent many hours reading to students and conveying the importance of developing reading and creative writing skills.
The Co-operators made a donation in the name of Tyler to the Guelph Wish Fund.
