Storm down Wolves 5-1, earn third straight win
Ending the weekend off on the right foot, the Guelph storm are now on a three game winning streak after beating the Sudbury Wolves this Sunday evening 5-1.
Starting the first period both teams seemed unsure about their plays and making a handful of incomplete passes while also mishandling the puck. This quickly changed after a penalty for high sticking served by Owen Lalonde for the Storm 3:43 into the period. Both teams seemed to get their acts together and started playing some great hockey. At 11:55 in the period both teams took a two minute penalty. For the Storm it was Dmitri Samorukov with an interference call and for the Wolves Darian Pilon served his penalty for cross checking. With the clock winding down and both teams playing extremely offencive, neither was able to take the first goal of the game.
With the score set at 0-0 the teams came back onto the ice looking to open up the scoreboard. Only 2:20 into the second period the Storms Isaac Ratcliffe scored the first goal of the game and his eighth of the season with assists from Ryan Merkley and Garrett McFadden. The Storm were aiming for the victory early on in the period. About one minute later Cam Hillis scored his fifth of the season after he took the rebound when Ratcliffe just barely missed the net after the puck was sent into the zone by Hillis on a power-play. The score was 2-0 only 3:46 into the period.
Hungry for more, the Storm’s Matt Hotchkiss was a little too trigger happy and sent the puck out of the rink and into the stands and received a two minute delay of game penalty. Short handed, Liam Hawel stole the puck away from the Wolves and made a break towards the net. With ease he faked out Marshall Frappier, the goaltender for the Wolves and scored his third goal of the season unassisted at 5:20 making the score 3-0 for the Storm.
The Wolves answered back with their own goal at 6:36 when Samorukov received another penalty, this time for a high stick. The goal was scored by Macauley Carson and assisted by Troy Lajeunesse and Dmitry Sokolov.
The score was 3-1 and again at 13:44 the Storm came back with Nate Schnarr who scored his fifth of the season assisted by Merkley and Hawel increasing their lead to 4-1. Now with their huge lead the Storm wanted to show the Wolves that this was their game. On a power play Hillis takes his second of the game and sixth of the season with help from Ratcliffe and Merkley. The period came to an end leaving the Storm up 5-1.
Frappier was replaced with Jake McGrath for the Wolves in hopes that no more goals would be scored on them during the third period. The Storm took four penalties back to back during a very rough third period. The Storm was looking to grab their sixth goal of the game but it was disallowed because it was kicked into the net. As the clock hit zero the Storm took their third win in a row 5-1
The Storm had a total of 18 penalty minutes during the game and still managed to pull off the win. Shots on goal 34-31 in favour of the Storm.
