Storm dazed by Wolves as losing skid continues
By Tony Saxon, Guelph Mercury
Somebody’s losing skid was coming to a halt Sunday afternoon at the Sleeman Centre, unfortunately it turned out not be the Guelph Storm’s.
In a battle of the two worst teams in the Ontario Hockey League, the Sudbury Wolves skated to a 4-2 victory over the Storm.
The win snapped Sudbury’s losing streak at 16 games while Guelph’s consecutive game losing streak now sits at 14.
“There’s no question that one hurts,” said Storm general manager and interim coach Mike Kelly.
“We talked to them after the game and we said ‘this one hurts and we know it hurts. It hurts us too, so we’re all feeling the same thing,’ but there’s no choice but to go forward. We take (Monday) off and we get back to work Tuesday. You’ve got to put your work boots on and move forward,” Kelly said.
He was around for the team’s four-win season of 1991-92 and he understands that everyone is frustrated, on the bench and on the ice.
“There’s going to be a silver lining for some of these players in the organization. A lot of mental toughness is needed to get through this … there’s going to be some players whose sweaters are going to be hung from the rafters some day who are on this team right now,” Kelly said.
Mikkel Aagard scored what proved to be the winning goal at 7:54 of the third period, making a nice move at speed in front of two Storm defencemen before wristing a shot into the top corner.
