OHL prospects make their mark at U17 Summer Showcase
44 OHL prospects were in attendance at Hockey Canada’s National Under-17 Development Camp that wrapped up on Friday in Calgary as seven OHL prospects on Team Green were crowned champions of a six team tournament with a perfect 2-0-1 record.
Team Green won the Under-17 portion of the third annual edition of Hockey Canada’s Summer Showcase with a two-goal performance from defenceman Xavier Henry (Hamilton Bulldogs) in a 5-4 win over Team Gold on Friday.
Other OHL prospects victorious as members of Team Green included Brandon Coe (North Bay Battalion), Mitchell Russell (Owen Sound Attack), Keean Washkurak (Mississauga Steelheads), Evan Brand (Kingston Frontenacs) and goaltenders Christian Sbaraglia (Niagara IceDogs) and Luke Cavallin (Flint Firebirds).

Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds fourth round pick Joe Carroll led all OHL prospects in tournament scoring with four points (2-2–4) in three contests, scoring the game winner in Team Blue’s 3-2 win over Team White on Friday.
Other OHL notables in tournament scoring with three points each included Team Blue’s Tag Bertuzzi (Guelph Storm), Aidan Prueter (Saginaw Spirit), Team Gold’s Ethan Keppen (Flint Firebirds) and Alexandre Hogue (Sarnia Sting), Team Red’s Ryan Suzuki (Barrie Colts) and Nick Wong (Oshawa Generals) and Team White’s Navrin Mutter (Hamilton Bulldogs).

In total, OHL prospects netted 20 of the tournament’s 58 goals scored in nine games played.
In goal, Team Green’s Luke Cavallin (Flint Firebirds) led all OHL prospect goaltenders with a 2.62 goals-against average while Team White’s Mack Guzda (Owen Sound Attack) trailed at 2.79.
With events such as the OHL Gold Cup and Hockey Canada’s development camp behind them, players will continue to be evaluated through the early season before 66 are selected to represent Canada on one of three national teams – Team Canada Black, Team Canada Red, and Team Canada White – at the 2017 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, which is scheduled for Nov. 5-11 in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John, BC.
