Game Stories: Storm fall in the shootout
The Storm welcomed the Erie Otters to town for a Friday night divisional matchup at the Sleeman Centre. The Storm were coming off a couple of losses and looking to bounce back against the Otters. Liam Herbst and Jake Lawr were the netminders for their respective team. It was a hard fought spirited matchup, but the Otters claimed the 4-3 victory in the shootout.
Like clockwork it was the Storm who got off to a quick start in the opening frame on a beautiful backdoor goal by Nate Schnarr just 5:51 into the first, Givani Smith and Luke Burghardt picked up the assists on the opening goal.
However, it did not take long for the Otters to respond when Christain Girhiny scored off a quick play from the faceoff, the time of the goal was 7:37.
The high tempo period continued with plenty of chances for both teams, and the Storm were able to capitalize on a backdoor pass scored by Albert Michnac at the 10:35 mark in the period.
Shots after the first period were 10-9 in favour of the home team.
The second period was off to a fast start as both teams were able to generate great scoring chances.
Givani Smith extended the Storm lead as he got the puck in front of the net and made no mistake by putting it past Lawr to give the Storm the 3-1 lead with just six minutes into the second period. The Storm entered the third period with a two-goal lead, and the quick pace continued. Halfway through the third period and the Otters headed to the power play after a James McEwan
Halfway through the third period and the Otters headed to the power play after a James McEwan received a delay of game penalty and the Otters high-powered offense took advantage as Taylor Raddysh found the back of the net to cut the lead to one.
In the dying moments of the game with the Storm pressured in their own end, the Otters tied the game on the Kyle Maksimovich blast.
The game headed to 3-on-3 overtime, early on it was the Storm with some early chances but the Otters took control and had possession and many chances for the remainder of overtime. Neither team was able to score, and the shots after overtime were tied at 37.
With no winner after 65 minutes of play, the game went to a shootout. This was the first shootout of the season for both teams. The first three shooters were all unable to score and in the sudden death round, Ivan Lodina put the puck past Herbst to give Erie the victory.
With the loss, the Storm fall to 3-5-0-1 and the Otters improve to 5-3-0-0
