First round pick Alex McLean commits to Storm
Guelph, ON – Guelph Storm General Manager George Burnett announced today that 2024 first-round pick Alex McLean has signed an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the hockey club.
The 5’10, 170 lbs centreman from Perth, Ontario was selected 9th overall in this year’s OHL Priority Selection.
“Alex was amongst the elite players available in this year’s draft,” said General Manager George Burnett. “His outstanding ability to create offense is matched equally by his intelligence, compete, and ability to play away from the puck. We are excited to welcome Alex and his family to the Storm organization.”
The 2008-born forward had a tremendous 2023-2024 season with the Barrie Jr Colts U16 AAA squad. The left-shot centre recorded 31 goals and 54 assists for 85 points in 38 games during the regular season, which included an 8-point performance in 5 games at the OHL Cup. McLean added 14 goals and 17 assists for 31 points in 10 playoff games this spring, bringing his season totals to 116 points in just 48 total games.
Before joining the Jr Colts, McLean suited up for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite U14 program in 2022-2023 where he notched 7 goals and 6 assists for 13 points in 12 games.
“I am extremely excited to join the Guelph Storm,” said McLean. “It has been a lifelong dream of mine to play in the OHL and there is no better organization to play for.”
