Daws, potential starter for Canada at World Juniors, a ‘great story’

Before this season, Nico Daws had no idea if he would get his chance to be a starting goaltender in the Ontario Hockey League.
He wasn’t even certain he would remain a member of the defending league champion Guelph Storm much longer.
But the one thing he did know was the extra-large training camp T-shirt Storm GM/coach George Burnett tossed his way wasn’t going to come close to fitting the new body he had painstakingly built during the summer.
Daws, who had dropped about 30 pounds of unnecessary weight, handed it back and asked for a medium-sized top. That immediately caught Burnett’s attention.
And on Monday, the OHL’s best goaltender to date pulled a Hockey Canada sweater over his head for the first time at the national world junior selection camp in Oakville.
It’s a perfect fit.
“It’s just a really great story if you look at how far he’s come over the past two years,” Burnett, the proud coach, said. “Nico earned the right to be there and it’s not going to surprise me for him to be the guy for Canada. He’s been that good. He’s calm, composed, with a great attitude. He’s a big goaltender (6-foot-4, 202 pounds) and there is not a lot of excessive movement in his game.
