“He’s everywhere, on billboards and buses,” says Don McKee, head coach of the Lakehead University men’s hockey team, in reference to former Bancroft resident Andrew Brown.
Apparently McKee wasn’t the only person paying attention. During the first night of celebrations in the CIS national championships Brown became the first Lakehead player to take home the prestigious Randy Gregg Award at the annual Canadian Interuniversity Sport awards dinner, a nod to his triple ability on the ice, in the classroom and in the community.
Brown, had five goals and 20 points for the tournament host Thunderwolves in 2008-09, the final of his five-year stint with Lakehead, was his typical humble self in acknowledging the honour.
“To be honest, just to be nominated by the OUA was really special. But to know that I actually got the award is a pretty unbelievable feeling. Yeah, it’s an individual award and my name is going to be on the trophy, but I look at it as a team award.
“Our organization puts us in every position possible to be active in the community and be successful both in our community and Thunder Bay, so we like to take advantage of that. I’m not doing the stuff around the community on my own. Lots of teammates come out with me,” said Brown, who beat out long-time junior teammate Marc Rancourt of Saint Mary’s for the award.
