Turris scored both of Team Canada’s goals, on the power play, and Steve Mason turned aside every shot he faced as Canada blanked Slovakia 2-0 for their second win of the tournament. 

It’s the first time Canada has opened the tournament with back-to-back shutouts and it’s the first time since 1984 that they’ve had consecutive shutouts with two different goalies (Ken Wregget and Alan Bester).

After failing to score on five power-play chances in the first, including a two-man advantage, Canada wasted little time on its next man advantage, scoring 54 seconds into the second period.

Turris and Drew Doughty hooked up for Canada‘s second goal late in the third to seal the victory. For Doughty it was his second point of the game.

“It was a tough start for our kids,” said head coach Craig Hartsburg. “We had the toughest start in this tournament.

“It’s the type of game today that the power-play could have grabbed control of it earlier. We’ll work on it again tomorrow and come back against the Swedes.”

Mason stopped all 22 shots he faced to follow up Jonathan Bernier’s shutout performance on Wednesday with one of his own, leaving Hartsburg with an interesting decision on who to start in the next game.

“They’re both good goalies and we feel confident we’ve got two great kids there that can handle any situation,” he said.

Canada has not surrendered an even strength goal since the second game of the 2007 tournament, a shutout streak of more than 370 minutes.

The win extended Canada‘s streak at the tournament to 20 games since they last lost. They also maintained their unbeaten record against the Slovaks to six games.

After back-to-back games to start the tournament, Canada will have a day off Friday before facing Sweden in their next game on Saturday. The Swedes opened the tournament with a win against Slovakia and will face Denmark on Friday.
