Ranger’s power play basts Storm in series opener
By Tony Saxon, Guelph Mercury
The demise of the Kitchener Rangers power play was apparently greatly exaggerated.
It might have been ranked 15th during the regular season, but it was a well-oiled machine Friday night, scoring four times in a series-opening 5-2 win over the Guelph Storm.
Game 2 of the best-of-seven opening round series goes Sunday night in Kitchener.
Four of those goals came on long-range blasts that Storm goaltender Garret Sparks likely didn’t see, as Kitchener got plenty of traffic in front of Sparks while their defencemen let rip from the point.
“It’s easy to say, ‘I didn’t see the shot’ or ‘I got run into,’ but at the end of the day it’s up to you to make the adjustment. Making excuses isn’t going to win you a series,” Sparks said.
The Storm netminder said maturing as a goaltender will help him handle nights like Friday.
