It’s official: Guelph Storm submits 2027 Memorial Cup bid by GuelphToday.com
The Guelph Storm is officially in the running to host the 2027 Memorial Cup.
The team submitted its bid Friday ahead of the 5 p.m. deadline. As of Friday afternoon, Kitchener, Kingston and Niagara have expressed public intent to bid on the tournament.
Guelph’s intent is to have the tournament coincide with the city’s 200th anniversary.
“I think if it wasn’t the bicentennial, I don’t think we would have put a bid in,” said Matt Newby, the team’s vice president, business operations.
He said from a hockey side, the team has been building toward being a 2027 contender for the last couple years, not only with the players selected but the draft capital built up lately.
Guelph sits with two second-round picks in the next three OHL drafts.
The team also owns three third-round picks for 2026.
Guelph hosted the tournament in 2002, but the franchise has never won the Canadian Hockey League’s top prize.
