Eastern Conference Wins Skills Competition
On Tuesday night in Sault Ste. Marie, the East All-Stars defeated the Western Conference All-Stars including Storm defencemen Drew Doughty and Mike Caruso 19-18 in the OHL All-Stars Skills Competition.
The two teams competed in several events in front of 4,061 fans at the Steelback Centre in the Puck Control Relay, Fastest Skater, Hardest Shot, Shooting Accuracy, Breakaway Relay and a 3 on 3 Game.
Doughty and Caruso each participated in the Hardest Shot competition, Breakaway Relay and the 3 on 3 Game. In the Hardest Shot event, Yannick Weber of the Kitchener Rangers topped former Storm blueliner Josh Godfrey with a blast measuring 99.2 mph. Godfrey, last year’s winner finished tied for second at 98.1 mph. Caruso and Doughty were eighth and ninth respectively out of ten shooters with fastest shots of 94 mph (Caruso) and 89.9 mph (Doughty). Neither Storm player scored in the Breakaway Relay or the 3 on 3 Game.
The event was tied at 18 after each competition and decided by a shootout where Brett MacLean scored the winner, while Steve Stamkos couldn’t find the back of the net for the West.
