STEELHEADS DEAL OWEN BECK TO PETES FOR JACK VAN VOLSEN, JUSTIN DEZOETE AND PICKS
The Mississauga Steelheads announced they have traded Beck to Peterborough for Van Volsen, DeZoete and four picks.
MISSISSAUGA, ON – Saturday afternoon the Mississauga Steelheads announced a trade with the Peterborough Petes, sending centreman Owen Beck in exchange for Jack Van Volsen (C), Justin DeZoete (RW), two second-round picks in 2025 (PBO and ER), a 2025 third-round pick (PBO), and a 2026 fourth-round pick (PBO).
The Steelheads drafted Beck in the second round (#29 overall) of the 2020 OHL Priority Selection. He put up 51 points (21G,30A) in his rookie year, and has 40 points (17G,23A) through 30 games in the 2022-23 season. The centreman was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the second round (33rd overall) in the 2022 NHL Draft. Out of training camp in October, the 18-year old signed an entry-level contract with the hockey club.
Beck has several accolades on his resume, including an invitation to the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game last March, the Bobby Smith Trophy for academic excellence in the OHL, and the CHL Scholastic Player of the Year. The Port Hope native was also promoted to an assistant captain position for this season with the Steelheads. Most recently, Beck was added to the Team Canada World Junior roster after a member of the team was injured and won a gold medal with the team on January 5th.
One of the players coming back the other way is Jack Van Volsen who was Peterborough’s first-round pick (#6 overall) in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection. The Brooklin, ON native has registered 11 points (7G,4A) in the first 29 games of his rookie season. The 6-2, 172-pound forward represented Team Canada White at the U17 World Hockey Challenge this year, scoring 2 goals in 6 games.
Mississauga also receives 2004-born winger Justin DeZoete who was selected in the second round (#35 overall) in the 2020 OHL Draft, just six picks behind Beck. In his rookie season, the Hamilton native tallied 23 points (11G,12A). So far this season, he has 14 points (5G,9A) through 36 games.
Head Coach and General Manager James Richmond commented on the latest acquisitions. “We are super excited to see Jack in the blue and white! Jack is a big strong skilled forward that is one of the best players in his age class. Justin is a high character high energy leader. We are pumped to know Justin will be playing for the blue and white as opposed to playing against him.”
We’d like to thank Owen Beck for all that he has contributed to the Steelheads and wish him all the best in his future hockey career!
