FOWLER AND CAMPBELL WIN GOLD WITH USA IN OVERTIME AT WORLD JUNIORS, CANADA TAKES SILVER
(Saskatoon) With one last game to play in the 2010 World Junior Championships, it was a game for the ages between Canada and the USA.
Team USA beat Team Canada 6-5 in overtime last night when former London Knight John Carlson ripped a shot past Canadian goaltender Martin Jones at 4:31 of the extra frame. The win secured the Gold medal for Team USA at this year’s competition, with this being the second time that the American side has won gold in WJHC history, after having defeated Canada in the 2004 tournament.
The Windsor Spitfires had 5 players participating in this game as Cam Fowler represented Team USA and Taylor Hall, Greg Nemisz , Ryan Ellis and Adam Henrique all suited up for Team Canada. Additionally, future Spitfire goaltender Jack Campbell came into the game midway through the second period for Team USA, replacing starter Mike Lee, Campbell would stop 32 of the 34 shots he faced for the win with Fowler also playing a key role for Team USA on the back end all tournament as well as in last night’s thriller.
Spitfire players made significant contributions to Team Canada all tournament and the Gold medal game was no exception. Spitfire forward Greg Nemisz scored a goal for Canada tying the game 2-2 then Spits forward Taylor Hall would get his sixth of the tournament to once again tie the game 3-3 at the end of the second period. Hall finished the game with one goal and two assists and Spits defenceman Ryan Ellis also added one assist for the Canadians.
With four minutes left in the game Canada found themselves down 5-3 before Jordan Eberle would score a pair of goals to tie the game giving him his seventh and eighth markers of the tourney, while securing his spot for the all-time career goal scoring lead on Canada’s world junior team at 13. With Canada’s silver medal performance last night, the Canadian side has now secured a medal in 12 consecutive WJHC tournaments.
