Ben Chiarot joined the Saginaw Spirit after a trade with the Sudbury Wolves during the 2010-11 season. Chiarot added a veteran presence on the back end for the Spirit, who would go on to win the West Division for the first time that season. In 39 regular season games, Chiarot scored five goals and added 19 assists for 24 points. The fourth-round pick, 120th overall, by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2009, would finish his OHL career in a Spirit uniform.
The Hamilton, Ontario native made his NHL debut for the Winnipeg Jets on November 2nd, 2013 against the Chicago Blackhawks. Chiarot became an NHL regular during the 2015-16 season, staying with the NHL club all season and appearing in 70 games. After six seasons with the Winnipeg Jets, Chiarot signed with the Montreal Canadiens prior to the 2019-20 season. Chiarot enjoyed his most fruitful NHL campaign that year, scoring 21 points. In March 2022, Chiarot was dealt to the Florida Panthers and tallied 8 points in 20 games played during the 2021-22 season. In July 2022, the free agent defenseman signed a four year deal with the Detroit Red Wings. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound rearguard has developed into one of the top shutdown defenseman in the entire National Hockey League.
