4/8/15 Saginaw Spirit Forward Mitchell Stephens to Lead Canada in International Event
On the eve of the start of the 2015 IIHF Under 18 World Championship, Saginaw Spirit forward Mitchell Stephens has been named the Captain of Team Canada. Stephens along with Spirit teammate Evan Cormier are featured in the 17th edition of the event, which will be staged in both Zug and Lucerne Switzerland beginning on April 16th through April 26th, the date of the Gold Medal Game. Team Canada and Team USA will be part of a ten team field at the event, with the U. S. the defending champion.
Stephens has built a solid resume in terms of international play over the past couple of seasons with his selection to represent Team Canada at the 2014 Under 18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, and in skating with Team Ontario at the 2014 World Under 17 event. This past season with the Spirit, the NHL draft eligible forward produced 22 goals and 26 assists in 62 games played, good for second in team scoring. Stephens was also a participant in this year’s CHL Top Prospects Game.
Cormier joined the Spirit in the days surrounding the OHL trade deadline in January and among other accomplishments was named the Canadian Hockey League’s Goaltender of the Week in the second half of the season, while posting 12 wins, a 3.24 goals against average, and three shutouts this past year between Saginaw and the North Bay Battalion. Cormier is eligible for the 2016 National Hockey League draft.
