Kitchener, Ont. – The Kitchener Rangers announced today that the club has signed 2026 second-round CHL Import Draft selection (74th overall), defenceman Jiri Gombar, to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement.

Gombár is a six-foot-one defenceman from Czechia who spent last season with the HC Energie Karlovy Vary at the U17 and U20 levels. In 22 games with the U17 team, Gombár produced an impressive 40 points (13G, 27A) along with 16 penalty minutes and a +38 plus/minus rating. In 24 games with the U20 team, Gombár scored three goals and added eight helpers for 11 points.

“Jiri is a mobile smooth skating two-way defender that plays a poised and smart game,” said Mike McKenzie. “He is a very well-rounded player. We are excited to welcome Jiri to the Rangers.”

Gombár is the first Czech native to suit up for the Rangers since Eduard Šalé and Tomáš Hamara during the 2023-24 season. He joins a strong pipeline of Czech-born skaters to come through the Kitchener ranks like 2003 Memorial Cup champion, Petr Kanko, first-round NHL draft pick, Jakub Kindl, current NHL forward, Radek Faksa along with Šalé, Hamara, and others.

"Signing with the Rangers is a huge honour and a dream come true," said Jiří Gombár. "I am incredibly excited for this new challenge and can't wait to play in front of the amazing fans in Kitchener."

The Czech native has represented his host nation twice on the international stage at both the U17 and U18 level. In a combined 30 games of international play, Gombár has two goals and five assists. He is eligible for the 2028 NHL Draft.

TORONTO — The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) will send 31 prospects to Canada’s National Under-17 Development Camp, more than any other Canadian Hockey League (CHL) circuit, Hockey Canada announced Tuesday.

The OHL group headlines an 80-player field that also includes 29 players from the Western Hockey League (WHL) and 20 from the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The camp runs July 17-21 at the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville, with players split into four teams for two days of practice and six games from July 19-21.

The roster was selected by Program of Excellence (POE) general manager Alan Millar, POE head scout Byron Bonora and U17 assistant general manager Mike Johnston (Portland Winterhawks, WHL), with input from Hockey Canada’s regional scouting staff that includes Scott Grieve (Erie Otters) and Rob Simpson (London Knights). Following camp, players will continue to be evaluated through the start of the 2026-27 season before Canada Red and Canada White rosters are named ahead of the 2026 U17 World Challenge, set for Nov. 1-7, also in Oakville.

Announced last week, Team Red will be led by Director of Hockey Operations Dave Drinkill (Saginaw Spirit) and also features former Soo Greyhounds Assistant Coach Brendan Taylor along with Video Coach Ryan Lennon (Kingston Frontenacs) and Equipment Manager Brandon Grace (Sudbury Wolves).

Team White will be overseen by Director of Hockey Operations Dylan Seca (Sarnia Sting) and features Head Coach Dylan Smoskowitz (Barrie Colts), Video Coach Alex Darling (Peterborough Petes) and Equipment Manager Justin Vanderlaan (Sarnia Sting).

Guest Staff assisting with the execution of the U17 Development Camp include Guest Coaches Brad Flynn (Kitchener Rangers), Brayden Guy (Sarnia Sting), Goaltending Coach Nate McDonald (North Bay Battalion), Athletic Therapists Luca Paron (London Knights) and David Pandolfi (formerly Niagara IceDogs) along with a pair of OHL Alumni in Daniel Tkaczuk and Corey Locke as Skills Coaches.

Canada has won gold at the U17 World Challenge three years running. Last year in Truro, N.S., Canada White captured gold behind six OHL players, defeating a Canada Red squad that carried 11 OHL players by a 6-3 final.

Kitchener, Ont. — The Kitchener Rangers are proud to announce that forward Evan Fitzgerald has signed an Ontario Hockey League Scholarship and Development Agreement with the club.

Fitzgerald was selected by the Rangers in the second round, 41st overall, in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection. A left-shot forward from Peterborough, Ontario, Fitzgerald spent last season with the Vaughan Kings U16 AAA program.

“Evan is one of the most tenacious, scrappy and hard to play against players in the 2010 age group and we were thrilled to get him at the end of the second round of the draft,” said Kitchener Rangers General Manager Mike McKenzie. “He creates offence and makes things happen by going to the hard areas of the ice and outworking and battling opponents. We think his game will translate well to our league and team.”

Fitzgerald, 15, born on Sept. 10, 2010, is listed at five-foot-eleven and 160 pounds. In 32 regular-season games with the Vaughan Kings U16 AAA, he recorded 16 goals and 17 assists for 33 points, while adding two goals and three assists for five points in four OHL Cup games.

"I am truly honoured and grateful to sign with the Kitchener Rangers to continue my hockey journey," said Evan Fitzgerald. "I look forward to earning the trust of the coaches and my teammates through hard work. To be part of such a historic organization to continue my development is a dream come true.
I can’t wait to get started and play at the Aud in front of the passionate Rangers fans."

The signing marks an important step in Fitzgerald’s development path with the Rangers, giving him the opportunity to continue building his game within the organization’s program. Fitzgerald will join the Rangers next at training camp as he prepares for the next stage of his hockey career.

Kitchener, Ont. —The Nashville Predators announced today that Jordan DeKort has accepted a new role with the organization as Professional Development Goaltending Coach.

DeKort, who served most recently as the Rangers’ Director of Goaltending and Video Coach, has been an important part of the club’s hockey operations staff and goaltending development program. In his new role with Nashville, he will support the development of goaltenders across the Predators organization and will serve as the goalie coach for the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) and Atlanta Gladiators (ECHL).

“Jordan played a key role in our hockey operations as both Director of Goaltending and Video Coach,” said Kitchener Rangers General Manager Mike McKenzie. “He will be sorely missed on both fronts and as well as just his overall presence around the rinks. We are very excited for him to earn this opportunity and wish him the best of luck in Nashville and Milwaukee.”

A former OHL goaltender, DeKort played four seasons in the league from 2011 to 2015, including the 2013-14 season with the Kitchener Rangers. He returned to the organization in 2021 as Goaltending Coach before being promoted in 2023 to Director of Goaltending and Video Coach, where he oversaw goaltending development, scouting, prospect development, and team video operations.

“I would like to thank Mike McKenzie for allowing me the opportunity to come back to Kitchener. I would also like to thank our entire staff, hockey ops, business staff and players for making my experience in Kitchener first class,” said DeKort. “Being able to help bring a memorial cup back to Kitchener has been one of the highlights of my life, and being able to bring it to the most deserving fans in the CHL made it even better. I am extremely grateful for my time in Kitchener and the all the people who have helped support me over the last 5 years. The Rangers thank DeKort for his contributions to the organization and wish him continued success with the Predators.”

In his five seasons with the Kitchener Rangers, Jordan left a positive impact on all of the goalies he worked with in the Rangers organization. Developing goaltenders to play and thrive at the next level like Pavel Cajan, Marco Costantini, Christian Kirsch, Jackson Parsons, and Jason Schaubel to name a few.

“Jordan did an outstanding job working with me this season and played a huge role in my development as a goalie,” said San Jose Sharks prospect, Christian Kirsch. “He constantly challenged me in practice, paid attention to the small details in my game, and always found ways to help me improve. His coaching gave me more confidence, consistency, and better habits, which had a big impact on my performance throughout the season. I’m really grateful for all the time and effort he put into helping me become a better goalie.”

Jackson Parsons, 2025 OHL and CHL Goalie of the Year also weighed in on his former goaltending coaches promotion to the big leagues:

"I was thrilled to hear that Jordan was joining an NHL club," said Ottawa Senators prospect, Jackson Parsons. "Jordan was instrumental in my success in the OHL and a big part of my development. I couldn’t be happier for him and he will do great things with the Predators organization!"

Chief Operating Officer and Governor, Joe Birch thanked Jordan for his tireless work and contributions to the organization:

“On behalf of the Kitchener Rangers, congratulations to Jordan on his new role with the Nashville Predators and Milwaukee Admirals. This is a well-deserved opportunity and a reflection of his character, work ethic, and impact on our organization. We’re proud of Jordan and excited to see him take this next step in his career.”

Thank you again, Jordan, for your incredible contributions to the Kitchener Rangers organization.

Kitchener, Ont. — The Kitchener Rangers are proud to announce that defenceman Logan Massimi has signed an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the club.

Massimi, a native of Scarborough, Ontario, was selected in the ninth round, 182nd overall, in the 2025 OHL Priority Selection. The right-shot defenceman joins the organization after spending last season with the Waterloo Siskins of the GOHL, establishing himself as a promising young player with the tools, compete level, and commitment needed to continue developing at the next level.

“Logan had a great year of development in Junior B and was exceptional at our spring camp,” said Kitchener Rangers General Manager, Mike McKenzie. “He has taken big strides since we drafted him. He plays a very well-rounded game, and we see a bright future for him in our program.”

Massimi, 17, born on January 5th, 2009, is listed at six-foot, 182 pounds. In 49 games with the Waterloo Siskins, Massimi recorded two goals and 16 assists, while racking up 47 penalty minutes. Massimi was called up for the Kitchener Rangers final game of the regular season last year against the Owen Sound Attack. He had a +3 plus/minus rating in the game.

Massimi shared his thoughts on what it meant to him signing his Standard Player Agreement with the Kitchener Rangers:

"Signing with Kitchener means the world to me. Getting drafted by the team and having them believe in me was an incredible feeling, and now being able to sign with the organization makes it even more special. It’s hard to put into words how grateful i am for this opportunity.

My past season in GOHL with Waterloo was huge for my development. The staff were amazing and put a lot of trust in me allowing my game to make huge strides. Even just being around the Kitchener-Waterloo community and becoming familiar with the area was amazing seeing all the support that these fans give.

Having the opportunity to be apart of such a great organization like Kitchener is huge especially coming off of a year like they just had with a memorial cup title. It’s big shoes to fill but I’m super excited to get to work and to see what’s in store."

Massimi will join the team next at training camp in August.

Andreev represented Russia on the international stage with the U16 program featuring in four games while scoring six goals and one assist. At the Russia Cup (U16), Andreyev continued to produce scoring 16 times in 24 games, while adding 11 assists.

New this season, CHL teams were permitted to draft 16-year old skaters in the Import Draft (Round 1 only). Roman is eligible for the 2028 NHL Draft and is currently slated to play for the MHK Dynamo Moska in the MHL (Minor Hockey League, Russia).

"Roman is a big scoring forward that is extremely skilled and has a high-end shot," said General Manager, Mike McKenzie. "He is a threat anytime he has the puck. We look forward to seeing him in a Ranger uniform."

With their second selection (74th overall) in the 2026 CHL Import Draft, the Kitchener Rangers selected Jiří Gombar. Gombar is a six-foot-one defenceman from Czechia who spent last season with the HC Energie Karlovy Vary at the U17 and U20 levels. Kitchener's final selection of the 2026 CHL Import Draft was Swedish forward, Benjamin Nyström from the Luleå HF U20 program. Nyström stands in at six-foot-three, 190 pounds, turning just 17 years old this past March. Born in Boden, Sweden, Nyström played 36 games between the U18 Region and U18 Nationell in Sweden. "Benjamin is a big, strong physical player that also has good hands and offensive instincts," said Mike McKenzie. "He has put up big numbers in the Swedish league this year and plays a hard brand of hockey that would transition well to our league and team."

Notable players selected in the CHL Import Draft that have played for the Rangers are 2022 Stanley Cup Champion Gabriel Landeskog, Radek Faksa, Petr Kanko, Jakub Kindl, Tobias Rieder, Boris Valábik, and most recently, 2026 OHL and Memorial Cup Champion, Christian Kirsch.
