Petes Pick Up A Point Against IceDogs
Justin DeZoete recorded his ninth goal of the season and Tye Austin turned aside 22 shots as the Petes picked up a point in St. Catherines.
It took a few minutes for the Petes to skate off their bus legs as the IceDogs spent the first half of the opening period in Peterborough’s end. Unfortunately for the maroon and white, Niagara’s pressure resulted in Declan Waddick scoring his sixth of the season as the puck squeaked past tonight’s starter, Tye Austin.
Just before the first period expired, defenceman Artem Guryev flicked the puck into the neutral zone, which rolled into Niagara’s territory. Justin DeZoete picked up the loose puck, wacked the puck around a red jersey, and fired the puck past Joseph Costanzo for his 9th goal of the season. Samuel Mayer was credited with the secondary assist on the play.

The Petes led the shot clock 12-8 as they headed into the first intermission.
The second period consisted of a lot of back-and-forth hockey, with multiple scoring chances for each club. Austin and Costanzo stood tall and prevented any rubber from speaking past them. It was pretty clear that both goalies brought their A-game.

Just when you thought the middle frame was exciting, the third period had very few whistles and it felt like scoring chances for each team were happening every minute. The Lift Lock lads came out into the third period with a ton of speed and energy. J.R. Avon and Jax Dubois nearly converted on a 2-on-1, but couldn’t seal the deal.
Near the halfway point of the period, Nick Lardis turned on the jets and dangled through two IceDogs to generate a terrific scoring chance for the Petes but to no surprise to anyone, Costanzo shut the door. The third period solved nothing, and the game headed into overtime.

IceDogs captain Dakota Betts beat a sprawling Austin just 32 seconds into overtime to end the game. Austin was named the third star in tonight’s game.
