Petes Alumnus Sam Mayer Signs Two-Year AHL Contract with Silver Knights
On May 9, 2024, the Henderson Silver Knights announced that they have signed Petes alumnus Sam Mayer to a two-year AHL contract.
Mayer, a native of L’Orignal, ON, was originally selected by the Petes in the first round, 15th overall, of the 2020 OHL U18 Priority Selection. Over two and a half seasons with the Maroon and White, the 6’3” defenceman never missed an OHL game, playing in 173 while scoring 32 goals and adding 82 assists. During the 2023 OHL playoffs, Mayer featured in all 23 games, scoring twice and adding seven assists, helping the Petes raise the J. Ross Robertson Cup. In the 2023 Memorial Cup, he skated in all five games, scoring once and adding an assist.
“It means a lot to be able to sign my first professional contract with Henderson,” noted Mayer. “I’ve been working so hard to get to this point. Being able to play professional hockey is a dream come true.”
On January 7, 2024, the Petes traded Mayer to the Ottawa 67’s where he was able to complete his OHL career with his hometown team. After the trade, he continued to be a force on the back end. In 32 games with Ottawa, he scored nine goals and added 15 assists for 24 points. In 10 playoff games with the 67’s, Sam led the team in scoring with four goals and seven assists for 11 points.
