Vandenberg Displays A Strong Performance, IceDogs Can’t Weather The Storm
GUELPH, ON – Marcus Vandenberg makes 32 saves as the IceDogs fall for short to the hosting Storm.
Final Score: GUE 3 – NIA 2
Starting Goaltenders: Marcus Vandenberg (Niagara) – Brayden Gillespie (Guelph)
The first would prove to be a busy one with a flurry of chances on each side, 24 combined shots and a goal for each team. Ryan Roobroeck would open the games with scoring by beating Brayden Gillespie with a beautiful shot that beat him up high on the short side. Following the IceDogs goal they would continue to apply pressure with Gillespie needing to make a few impressive saves to keep it a one goal game. His bog saves would eventually lead to the tying goal as Max Namestnikov would squeak one past Marcus Vandenberg after a few crazy bounces. The game would head into the second period tied at one.
The second period would belong to the Storm as they would score two goals while constantly applying pressure throughout the period. The Storm would take the lead off a Charlie Paquette goal after a few lucky bounces found him looking at a wide open cage. Brayden Hislop would score his first of the season for Guelph’s second of the period. That goal gave them a 3-1 lead heading into the final frame. Marcus Vandenberg was impressive for the IceDogs in the period, making 17 saves, including a few highlight reel saves.
With the IceDogs trailing two in the third period they were looking for a spark plug to mount the comeback. Kevin He would be just that as he wired one past Gillespie for his ninth of the season and his fourth goal in as many games. With the period winding down the IceDogs would pull Vandenberg to bring on the extra attacker. Although a valiant effort, the IceDogs would fall short to the Storm.
