Wolves bite Hounds
It was the 6th and final meeting in the Bell Challenge Cup on Tuesday when the Hounds skated into the Nickel City to take on the Wolves.
Entering the game the Hounds were near flawless against their Northern Ontario rivals after posting a 4-0-0-1 record to-date.
And while the Hounds were coming off a strong 5-2 victory over the Sarnia Sting, the Wolves won in dramatic fashion over the Windsor Spitfires.
Following a pre-game ceremony recognizing team captain Marcus Foligno, the Wolves would come out strong and score two goals just 21 seconds apart.
First at the 2:44 mark, Greg Jambrosich would tip a Charlie Dodero point shot past the glove side of Chris Perugini and then Eric O’Dell would receive a pass to the slot at the 3:05 and the Wolves led 2-0.
Moments after the Wolves took the 2-0 lead Hounds forward David Broll, and Wolves defenseman Justin Sefton would drop the mitts leaving Broll leaving the ice under the assistance of the team’s training staff and what appeared to be another concussion on the Greyhounds roster.
Then with just over three minutes left Sudbury would capitalize on their second powerplay of the game.
Marcus Foligno, standing in the slot, would receive a pass from Michael Sgarbossa and the Wolves lead sat at 3-0 after 20 minutes.
Sudbury defenseman had 3 assists in the opening period as Sudbury outshot the Hounds 18-9 on the Prouse Chevrolet Shot Clock.
The Wolves continued their dominance and capitalized on an early 2nd period powerplay.
Eric O’Dell would be in the right place, right time after a shot from the point would hit and drop in front for him to swipe through for his 2nd of the night, just 55 seconds into the period, and the Wolves led 4-0.
Andrey Kuchin notched his 14th of the year just over five minutes left in the period and the Wolves led 5-0 after two periods.
Greyhounds winger Michael Kantor left the game in the second period after what appeared to be a re-aggrivated shoulder. Kantor had recently missed 6 games due to the same injury.
After the Wolves made it 6-0 the Greyhounds would score two late goals in the period breaking Alain Valiquette’s shutout bid.
Daniel Catenacci would put a backhand past Valiquette at the 16:42 mark for his third goal in as many games and put the Greyhounds on the board.
Then Vern Cooper would fire a shot blocker side at the 17:51 for the 6-2 final in favour of the Wolves.
