As a Sault native, Blake Speers knows all about Soo Greyhounds tradition.
Which is why even an intrasquad exhibition game carries meaning for the 18-year-old (1997 birth year) winger.
“It’s my third one,” said Speers, who’ll be among the Hounds players competing tonight in the annual Luke Williams Red & White Game.
Start time at Essar Centre is 7:07 p.m.
“It’s a good experience for the fans. They get a chance to see some prospects who won’t be playing this year, but are part of our future,” Speers added.
Speers also spoke of how Hounds veterans don’t want to be shown up by their teammates.
“I’m excited about it,” he said. “It’s a chance for everyone to show the fans what they’ve done over the summer.”
It’s also the third Red & White Game for 18-year-old (1997 birth year) defenceman Colton White, a London, Ont., native.
“It’s good to see the support we get from the fans for an intrasquad game,” said White, who, like Speers, was chosen by the New Jersey Devils in this year’s NHL Entry Draft. “It shows the kind of hockey town this city is.”
After two days of development camp, which featured players born in 1998 and ’99, and two days of main camp, Hounds brass will be looking to see which players are able to push through the fatigue tonight.
