Charron helps Hounds put up seven against Sudbury
A season-high seven goals put the Soo Greyhounds back into the win column on Wednesday Night.
Starting off their final homestand before the Christmas break the Hounds scored first, and often, while claiming their first win against Sudbury in three head-to-head meetings between the Northern Ontario rivals.
The win improved the Hounds to 14-15-0-0 on the season, and 8-5-0-0 on home ice at the GFL Memorial Gardens.
‘I think we have to start with the positives, so for a team that has really been struggling, to put six up (7 when you include empty netter) that’s a good sign. I’m really happy with that, really happy with opportunity creation but on the flip-side sloppy game, special teams were very average so we don’t want to make those games so tight and I thought we got away from our game. Very inconsistent game in my opinion. Some realy good points and a lot of peaks and values over the course of the game which for me as a coach you want an even line” explained Greyhounds Head Coach John Dean.
Justin Cloutier set-up Travis Hayes to cap off a 2-on-0 for his 9th goal of the season early in the first period (4:30) and the Greyhounds 1-0 led after twenty minutes.
The two teams combined for five goals in the second period that saw the Hounds jump out to a 4-2 advantage after forty minutes thanks to goals by Noel Nordh, Jordan Charron and Justin Cloutier.
Charron recorded his 1st-career OHL goal with a highlight reel goal that saw him move slickly around the Wolves defender before going upstairs on Marshall Finn for what was a 3-0 lead at that point of the night.
“What a beauty for his first. I got a feeling the floodgates are going to open up because if you watched the remainder of his game you could just see sense of relief, swagger. He got three our four more opportunities after that. I’m really happy him, I feel like he’s been snakebitten a bit, so really nice to see a beautiful first goal” commented Dean.
Brady Smith’s goal just fifty-seven seconds into the third period would hold as the game winner when the first-year Hounds completed the give-and-go with Noel Nordh for his 3rd of the campaign.
Alex Pharand completed the hat trick for the visitors to pull them back within a pair of goals in the period before Brady Martin ensured the Greyhounds victory into an empty net with 2:05 to play in regulation.
Seven different Hounds recorded goals – a season high – Travis Hayes, Noel Nordh, Jordan Charron, Justin Cloutier, Brady Smith, Marco Mignosa and Brady Martin.
Netminder Charlie Schenkel made 32 saves on 36 shots faced, and was the busiest in the third period facing 18 shots alone to record his 8th win of the 2024-25 season.
Schenkel now sits 3rd overall in the league for GAA with a mark of 2.67 and 2nd-best SV% at .920.
The Greyhounds continue the home stand on Friday (Dec. 13) when they host the Niagara IceDogs for their one-and-only regular season visit to Sault Ste. Marie.
Game time is 7:07 PM.
