Hounds drop close on in Windsor
The Soo Greyhounds were looking to start off their latest roadtrip by doing something they haven’t been able to do often this year, and that is defeat a West Division, Western Conference rival.
Entering the game with a 1-9-2-0 record versus division opponents, the Hounds began the week Thursday against the Windsor Spitfires.
Team Canada hopeful and Spitfire captain Ryan Ellis would open the scoring at the 3:43 mark taking back pass from Eric Locke and putting the one-time past Hounds netminder CHRIS PERUGINI for the 1-0 lead.
After Eric Locke made it 2-0 Windsor, the Greyhounds would get on the board when CHAD THIBODEAU converted for his 3rd goal of the season. The Sault Ste. Marie product was swarming around the goal of Jack Campbell (DAL), and would a rebound low to the left side of the net to put the Hounds within a goal.
Windsor would increase their lead once more before the period was over for a 3-1 lead resulting Hounds Head Coach Denny Lambert to place MATT MURRAY between the pipes for the final 1:34 before returning Perugini to start the 2nd period.
Shots were 12-12 after 20 minutes.
NICK COUSINS would start the 2nd period by putting the Hounds within a goal and then tying the contest all within the opening 4:11 of the period.
Just 1:02 into the period DANIEL CATENACCI cut across the Windsor blueline and while moving to Campbell’s right before feeding Cousins for a one time shot that would go high to the left side of the goal to make it a 3-2 game.
Then things would tie up when COLIN MILLER would feed Cousins a pass for a low shot that would beat Campbell clean and this game was tied.
But just as he opened the game, Ryan Ellis would close the scoring in this one at the 6:51 mark. While Windsor was enjoying a man advantage Ellis would let a point shot go that would be off the post and in for the game-winning goal.
The Hounds and Spitfires would go scoreless the rest of the way for a 4-3 final.
Windsor outshot the Hounds 32-28 on the Prouse Chevrolet shot clock, while the Hounds outshot Windsor 8-5 in the third period.
Nick Cousins was named the games Red Star third star of the game.
With the loss the Greyhounds record falls to 11-15-4-0.
