A pair of third period goals was the difference for the Soo Greyhounds on Sunday afternoon.
Leading 3-2, the Greyhounds added a pair of goals in the final 20 minutes in a 5-4 Ontario Hockey League victory over the Guelph Storm at the Sleeman Centre.
For the Greyhounds, the win wasn’t a pretty one, but capped off a successful road trip with a pair of victories.
“We came out strong and scored on the first shift and our guys thought this is going to be an easy night,” said Greyhounds Coach Drew Bannister. “Obviously it wasn’t.
“In the third, we were creating offence but we kept letting them in the game and there’s no reason why they should have been in the game if we were going to be a little bit smarter with the puck,” Bannister added.
The Greyhounds bench boss credited his team in the final minutes of the game for managing to keep the Storm hemmed into its own zone and not giving the team an opportunity to pull its goalie for an extended period to try to tie the contest.
“It was the line (Guelph) wanted out there and we just kept them hemmed in their zone,” Bannister said, “When they did get out in the last 40 seconds, they really didn’t have anything left in the gas tank.”
“It didn’t give them an opportunity to get into our end or get any quality time at the end with the goalie out,” Bannister added. “It was outstanding what (those two lines) did.
Zach Senyshyn led the way offensively for the Greyhounds with two goals.
“Third game on a road trip is always a little bit sloppy but I was really proud of the character we showed in the game,” Senyshyn told RogersTV following the game. “It was a shootout for sure.”
“Zach did a lot of good things away from the puck,” Bannister said of the veteran forward. “The opportunities he had, he’s very opportunistic. I like the way Zach’s starting to play away from the puck. He’s a much more valuable player to us.”
