Carter wins William Hanley Trophy
The Ontario Hockey League announced that Jeff Carter of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds won the William Hanley Trophy as the OHL's Most Sportsmanlike Player for the 2004-05 season.
Carter led the Greyhounds with 34 goals and 40 assists for 74 points in 55 games this season. He amassed 40 minutes in penalties and posted a team-leading +20 plus-minus rating. Carter also scored five goals and 10 points in seven playoff games this season.The 20-year-old London native was named to the All-Star Team at the World Junior Championships for the second straight year, helping Canada win the gold medal.
Earlier this week, Carter was named to the OHL's First All-Star Team. The first round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers wrapped up with his four-year career with the Greyhounds with 123 goals and 246 points in 236 games.
The William Hanley Trophy winner is awarded annually to the most sportsmanlike player as selected by OHL member team coaches and general managers. Teams were not permitted to vote for players from their own hockey club. Players receive five points for a first place vote, three points for a second place vote and one point for a third place vote.
Carter received 53 points in the voting while Danny Syvret of the London Knights was runner-up for the second straight season with 48 points and Bryan Little of the Barrie Colts was third with 34 points.
Carter becomes the third Greyhound to win the William Hanley Trophy following Wayne Gretzky (Sault Ste. Marie 1977-78) and John Goodwin (1980-81). Andre Benoit of the Kitchener Rangers won the trophy last season.
