Greyhounds King named team MVP, wins two other awards
By Peter Ruicci (Sault Star)
His first choice would have been to go out with a league championship.
While that proved an unrealistic goal, winning the Soo Greyhounds most valuable player award — one of three trophies he took home Sunday — proved a satisfying way for Dylan King to conclude his Ontario Hockey League career.
The 20-year-old Thessalon native was named team MVP, best defenceman and player’s player (an award voted on by his teammates), during the club’s annual end-of-season awards luncheon at the Marconi Club.
“Winning the team most valuable player award was definitely a surprise,” said King, a six-foot, 205-pounder who played four seasons here. “This is a big honour for me. It’s a great feeling and I’m really, really happy about it. It’s good to know that all of my hard work paid off.”
Playing as an overage, the 2010-2011 season was certainly King’s best.
A fifth-round draft choice of the Greyhounds in 2006, the defensive-minded rearguard played in 68 games, finishing with four goals, 17 assists and a plus-minus rating of 0.
He displayed toughness and character, serving as the team’s acting captain after Brock Beukeboom suffered a concussion that ended his season on Feb. 4.
“This is a great way for me to finish off my career as a Greyhound,” said King, who plans to leave early this week for Allen Tex., where he’ll join the Allen Americans of the Central Hockey League. “In my heart, I’ll always be a Greyhound.”
Daniel Catenacci, who finished the season with 26 goals, 45 assists and 71 points, was lauded for being the club’s top scorer, while fellow centre Nick Cousins won the 3-Star Award, given to the player accumulating the most points based on being named one of the stars at the Hounds home games.
Cousins finished with a team-high 29 goals, to go along with 39 assists.
Defenceman Ryan Sproul was named the club’s rookie of the year after a season in which he notched 14 goals and 19 assists.
Defenceman Derek Hartwick was named the team’s most improved player, while Carson Dubchak was honoured as the Greyhounds unsung hero.
For the second year in a row, Vern Cooper was chosen most gentlemanly player while rookie goalie Matt Murray is the Hounds scholastic player of the year.
