Seventeen Greyhounds’ Alumni on NHL Opening Night Rosters
Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League is proud to announce that 162 graduates will begin the 2019-20 season on NHL Opening Night rosters.
The 162 names represent active players which comprises over 20% of the NHL’s 31 teams. An additional 17 players were listed on injured reserve to start the new campaign.
The impressive list includes a pair of players that skated in the Ontario Hockey League during the 2018-19 season. Guelph Storm graduate and 2019 OHL Playoff MVP Nick Suzuki will begin the campaign with the Montreal Canadiens while 19-year-0ld Soo Greyhounds product Barrett Hayton will start with the Arizona Coyotes who selected him fifth overall in the 2018 NHL Draft. Saginaw Spirit defenceman Bode Wilde (NY Islanders) and London Knights forward Liam Foudy (Columbus) will begin the season on injured reserve with their respective NHL clubs.
At least one OHL graduate is included on the roster of all 31 NHL clubs. The Chicago Blackhawks lead the way with 12 OHL alumni followed by the Los Angeles Kings with nine and the Calgary Flames with eight.
The London Knights have produced the most graduates on NHL Opening Night rosters with a total of 24. The Soo Greyhounds boast the second-most with 17 graduates on the list while the Barrie Colts trail close behind with 13.
In addition to Suzuki and Hayton, the list also includes recent OHL names in 2018 graduate, defending NHL champion and former OHL champion Robert Thomas (Hamilton Bulldogs) of the St. Louis Blues. Joining him from the 2017-18 season are former second overall NHL Draft pick Andrei Svechnikov (Barrie Colts) of the Carolina Hurricanes and emerging blueliner Rasmus Sandin (Soo Greyhounds) of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
OHL graduates played a key role in bringing the St. Louis Blues their first Stanley Cup in their 52-year history this past spring as NHL Playoff MVP Ryan O’Reilly (Erie Otters) joined forces with other prominent former OHL names in goaltender Jordan Binnington (Owen Sound Attack) and captain Alex Pietrangelo (Barrie Colts). Vince Dunn (Niagara IceDogs), Pat Maroon (London Knights) and the aforementioned Thomas also played key parts in helping the Blues hoist the Stanley Cup.
Now the chase begins anew as the puck drops on the 2019-20 season with four games in the NHL tonight.
The OHL continues to be a leading supplier of talent to the NHL.
