Q&A with Andrew Gibson
Last month the Ontario Hockey League conducted both their Priority Selection and U18 Priority Selection.
Through those two processes, the Soo Greyhounds welcomed eighteen (18) players to the Program.
Since then we started to introduce you to members of this year’s draft class through a ‘Q&A’ feature exclusively here on soogreyhounds.com.
Today we continue that by featuring the Greyhounds 4th Round Selection in the OHL Priority Selection – Andrew Gibson.

What challenges did you overcome to get where you are now in hockey?
The toughest challenge I have ever faced was going through the COVID-19 pandemic. Our Bantam Major team overcame many challenges and we had the best regular season record in the Alliance. We were tied 2 points each with Waterloo in the Playdown Finals and we were headed to the OHF’s when it all came to an end. That was very difficult to accept. Not being able to play a Midget Minor season was another difficult challenge. To overcome the challenges, I have tried to stay mentally focused and have worked on getting physically stronger and faster.
What do you know about the Soo Greyhounds or the City of Sault Ste Marie?
I know that the Soo Greyhounds have a very long history of being a top OHL organization and they have a great system of developing many NHL players. I also know that the citizens of Sault Ste Marie are hardworking people and passionate about their hockey team.
Words of advice for a player aspiring to be drafted/play in the OHL?
My advice would be to keep working hard and never give up. I would also tell the player that you can do anything you set your mind to and surround yourself with positive people.

Over the last 15 months during Covid, what has helped you stay focused. What have you spent most of your time doing?
Over the last 15 months, I spent a lot more quality time with my family and focused on my schooling. I have also focused a lot of my time working out and staying fit to be able to play hockey at the next level. I joined up with a trainer and have worked on my overall strength, explosiveness and footspeed. I also spent a lot of time working out in my home gym. I tried to take advantage of extra skates whenever the restrictions allowed for me to do so. I also took advantage of playing pond hockey with friends when it was cold enough. When the rinks were closed, I would rollerblade, shoot pucks and stickhandle at home. I have also been hanging out with a small group of friends playing different outdoor sports and biking.
