NORTH BAY, ON-
A dominant first-period, and superb penalty kill set the tone for the Soo Greyhounds on Thursday Night as they opened up a three-game Eastern Ontario roadswing.
While holding the North Bay Battalion to just 3 shots in the opening twenty minutes, the Hounds would also score the first goal on a back-and-fourth feed between BORIS KATCHOUK and GUSTAV BOURAMMAN that ended with Katchouk redirecting a shot past Mat Woroniuk for the 1-0 lead on the powerplay goal.
Three minutes apart in the second period the Hounds would tally two more goals to increase their lead to three.
At 5:39, ZACH SENYSHYN took the familiar path up the right wing and cut to the net before backhanding home his 8th goal of the year for a two goal lead.
Then at 8:23, TIM GETTINGER quickly backhanded the rebound home for his 10th goal of the year and a three goal Greyhounds cushion. Assists on the latter goal went to COLTON WHITE and BORIS KATHOUK.
Nine-seconds after grabbing their third goal of the night, ZACH SENYSHYN was assessed a five minute major for slewfooting along with an ejection for the contest.
The Hounds penalty kill which was 3rd in the OHL entering the night successfully killed off 4:46 of that situation before North Bay was assessed a minor penalty to put the teams at 4-on-4.
Impressively though, the Hounds limited North Bay (19th PP in OHL) to a single shot in the over four minutes of powerplay time.
Hounds led 3-0 through two periods of play.
BORIS KATCHOUK would then score his 2nd goal of the night, and another on the powerplay, just 1:31 into the third period when his backhand from beside the goal registered the 4-1 advantage.
After North Bay got on the board at the 2:54 mark, the Hounds would flex their offensive muscles on two more occasions.
Just over the midway point of the third period a Battalion defenceman fell near his own line resulting in a Greyhounds 3-on-1. BOBBY MACINTYRE, who was carrying the puck up the left wing, opted for the shot and wristed it high and home to make it a 5-1 game.
While in the final minute of regulation JACK KOPACKA got to the top of the circles and wired a shot high over the blocker of Brent Moran who was required to replace Woroniuk due to injury, to round out the scoring.
The victory was the Hounds 5th consecutive and improved their record to 16-7-1-0, good for 33 points on the season.
