RECAP; Greyhounds see improved effort in trip opener

Through 40 minutes it looked as through the Soo Greyhounds were in good shape to extend its winning streak to seven games.
The Niagara IceDogs would make things a lot closer, but the Greyhounds would eventually hold on for a 4-3 Ontario Hockey League victory Thursday night at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines.
After falling behind 4-0 through two periods, the IceDogs would score three times in the third period to make it close but the IceDogs couldn’t find the equalizer in the final minute after Kirill Maksimov made it 4-3 with 46 seconds to go.
For the Greyhounds, it was one of their better efforts during its streak.
“That was probably the best game we had in quite a long time,” said Greyhounds Coach Drew Bannister. “We played really well for most of the game. We did a lot of good things. Our specialty teams were good. Our five-on-five play was good. We played with a lot of speed throughout the whole game and they had a tough time with it. Even physically, I thought we physically dominated the game too.”

Strong performance by OHL’s top dog’s

The imposters who’ve been pretending to be the Soo Greyhounds weren’t in St. Catharines on Thursday.
Instead, the ‘real’ Hounds, the ones who’ve been dominant for much of the Ontario Hockey League season, took centre stage.
Morgan Frost scored twice and Boris Katchouk notched a goal and two assists as the Greyhounds stopped the Niagara IceDogs 4-3 before 5,300 at the Meridian Centre.
The win was the Soo’s seventh in a row, although, by their own admission, the Hounds haven’t played with a great deal of urgency for the last three weeks.
“I thought it was the best game we’ve had in quite a while,” said Greyhounds head coach Drew Bannister. “We were good five-on-five and on special teams. We played with lots of speed throughout the game and we moved pucks a lot better than we have in recent games.”
“We played with confidence tonight,” added Katchouk, who scored his 34th goal early in the second period on a penalty shot to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. “We played a full 60 minutes, although we got some bad bounces near the end.”
That allowed the IceDogs to fight their way back from what had been a 4-0 deficit.
“I think our work ethic was at a higher level than it was over the past few games,” added Frost, whose team improved its record to 44-5-2-1, heading into an off day on Friday.
The road trip resumes Saturday in Erie (7 p.m.) and concludes on Sunday in Hamilton (2 p.m.).

The Greyhounds are scheduled to practice on Friday before continuing their trip into Erie, Pennsylvania.
They will enter action against the Otters on Saturday, February 10th (7 PM) at the Erie Insurance Arena. It caps off the two team’s season series and also marks their second meeting in less than a week.
