67’s split weekend with loss in Kingston
After an impressive win over the Sudbury Wolves at home, Saturday afternoon, the Ottawa 67’s saw their record drop to 1-2 on Sunday, falling 5-2 on the road to the Kingston Frontenacs.
Luca Pinelli got the offence started in the first period, but the Frontenacs scored five unanswered, before Will Gerrior got one back, despite Ottawa outshooting them 34-27.
The 67’s struggled to gain momentum, still gelling after a training camp disrupted by NHL camp invites, and being assessed three minor penalties before they earned their first powerplay, with 11:03 to go, and down by three goals.
Pinelli’s goal came early in the first period. Derek Smyth made a slick feed to the 67’s captain in the slot, and he made no mistake with a nice display of hands in tight, for his second goal of the season.
Ottawa carried their lead into the second, but Christopher Thibodeau knotted things up for the home side 5:06 in, with a one-timer that left little chance for 67’s netminder Max Donoso.
Jacob Battaglia beat Donoso short side a little over three minutes later, and early in the third, Kingston converted on the powerplay. Ottawa defender Frankie Marrelli had his stick broken off of a faceoff, and Ethan Miedema was able to walk to the net front unopposed, to put Kingston up 3-1.
Tyler Savard made it 4-1 soon after, and Battaglia’s second of the day put the game officially out of reach with 11:54 to go. Gerrior’s first of the season came in the dying seconds.
The 67’s head out on the road, this week, beginning a Northern Ontario swing with a visit to the North Bay Battalion on Thursday night, at 7:00pm.
