67’s flatten Frontenacs 5-3, push streak to seven
With both teams heading into their post-Christmas match-up looking to maintain their win streaks, the Ottawa 67’s were the ones to keep it intact, besting the Kingston Frontenacs 5-3.
The 67’s began the first period with an extra step over Kingston, controlling possession in the offensive zone in the first half. Nathan Amidovski would get tripped on a breakaway, leading to a penalty shot, which he would go on to bury to give Ottawa the 1-0 lead.
Ottawa would continue to pummel throughout the course of the second, as their active forechecking would pay off in dividends against Kingston’s more passive play. The 67’s strong forecheck would pay off in the second period with a won puck battle along the wall, leading to Barber Poles second goal of the night, courtesy of Cooper Foster. Jaxon Williams would add another to bring the score to 3-0. However, Frontenacs forward Camden McCuaig would quickly score after in an effort to stop the bleeding for his first career OHL goal. However, the 67’s would answer again, thanks to a power play point shot that was tipped in front by Thomas Vandenberg. With just mere moments left in the second, the Frontenacs would instill a reminder in the form of a goal by new enlist Alex Mclean, bringing the score to 4 to 2 Ottawa heading into the final third.
The Frontenacs would turn up the heat in the third, as they looked to make a big push. While the shift in pace allowed them to enter the 67’s zone and get more shots, they were still stifled by the 67’s, who kept them away from generating anything dangerous. The Barber Poles would clinch the game off of a net-front scramble by Shaan Kingwell, sealing the game 5-2.
“Going on a break, it’s tough to come back,” said Amidovski about the 67’s position heading into the game on a then six-game win streak. “Getting the win there keeps us going.” While the 67’s remain on top, Amidovski still thinks there’s room to improve. “Moving the puck as quickly as possible will help us score more goals and create more offensive chances.”
