The Colisée de Québec was built in 1930, but it had to wait another 12 years to have a skating rink.
In the night of March 15, 1949, a fire destroyed the Colisée with losses estimated at one million dollars. The City of Québec decided to reconstruct the amphitheatre and designed it to contain 10,000 seats.
Excavations began on May 24, 1949. Six months later, on December 8, 1949 a first hockey game took place opposing the Québec Aces and the Québec Citadelles. Seats had not yet been installed, but a final push had them in place a few weeks later.
April 26, 1951 remains a memorable day in the history of the Colisée. A record crowd of 16,806 spectators crammed into the Colisée to attend the Memorial Cup final between the Barrie Flyers and the Québec Citadelles.
In October 1972 the Colisée became the official home of the Québec Nordiques, just as it had been that of the Québec Aces of the American Hockey League. When the Nordiques joined the National Hockey League (NHL) in March 1979, the City of Québec decided to enlarge, adding 5000 more seats.
On January 28, 1981, right in the middle of the Nordiques’ second season in the NHL, a crowd of 15,250 fans took their seats in a newly renovated and modernized Colisée. The City of Québec now owned a building that met NHL requirements. The Nordiques continued to play here until the team was moved to Denver, Colorado in 1995.
Owned by the City of Québec, the Colisée de Québec became the Colisée Pepsi in November 1999. Host to the Québec Remparts’ games of the QJMHL, Colisée Pepsi is also used as a venue for a number of cultural events. Many internationally renowned groups and soloists have performed here.
