We derive our name from the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, honouring the servicemen who courageously represented Newfoundland overseas during the First World War. Known for their bravery and resilience, the Regiment were fearless and selfless through every battle.

They garnered great respect for their service and sacrifice, leaving an enduring legacy in Newfoundland and military history. The Newfoundland Regiment name embodies the spirit of unity, reflecting the influence and historical significance of those soldiers’ contributions to the province as we know it.

As one of Canada’s oldest regiments, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment holds a unique place in military history. It was the only Colonial Regiment to receive the “Royal” prefix during the First World War, marking the first such honour in British Army history awarded during hostilities.

The Regiment also pioneered recognition with the Queen’s and Regimental Colours, including the singular distinction in North America of bearing the Battle Honour “Gallipoli.” This legacy of excellence continues to inspire the Newfoundland Regiment hockey team both on and off the ice.
