Big second period helps Phoenix get past Titan
SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Acadie-Bathurst Titan finished off a back-to-back weekend visit to Quebec with a stop in Sherbrooke to take on the Phoenix on Sunday evening. Coming off a 3-1 win last night over Shawinigan, the Titan were without forward German Rubtsov this afternoon who was dealing with an injury.
Late in the first period the home side got things started with the first goal of the game. Kevin Gilbert scored at the 14:44 mark to put the Phoenix ahead 1-0. In the second period rookie Samuel Poulin scored his first goal in the QMJHL 46 seconds in to make it 2-0.
A goal from Yaroslav Alexeyev at 8:45 pushed their lead to 3-0 before Poulin added his second of the game with 30 seconds remaining in the period for a four-goal advantage. Adam Holwell and Jordan Maher scored one minute apart in the third period, at 6:23 and 8:23, making things interesting as they trailed by just two.
Benjamin Tardif put a stop to the Titan’s comeback with his sixth of the year to give the Phoenix a 5-2 lead. That would be the final as Brendan Cregan shut the door finishing with 35 saves. Joseph Murdaca and Reilly Pickard combined for 39 stops in the loss.
