Phoenix Overwhelmed by Armada at Home
The Phoenix returned to the Palais des Sports Friday night looking to build on their 2-0-1 record from the previous week. Sherbrooke had gotten plenty of scoring the last week in their past three games; a mid week 5-2 victory against Val-d’Or, a 2-1 overtime loss to Chicoutimi and high scoring 8-4 win against Baie-Comeau.
Tonight though, Blainville-Boisbriand had the scoring touch, putting up a total of eight goals on the Sherbrooke goalies Friday night, and shutting out the Birds offence in the last two periods.
After the first 20 minutes the game was tied at 2-2. Alexandre Alain scored both of the Armada’s first period goals while Olivier Schingh-Gomez, unassisted and Marek Zachar, assisted by Alexander Krief and Julien Bahl, scored the only two goals of the game for Sherbrooke.
In the second period the Armada began to take their stranglehold adding two more goals to give them their lead in the second period, with goals from TJ Melancon and Thomas Ethier. Blaiville-Boisbriand lit the goal lamp four more times in the third period to double their goal total for the game, taking the Friday night match 8-2. Alain was able to complete his hat-trick in the final period, earning the honour of being given the game’s first star.
Starter Evan Fitzpatrick stopped a total of 12 shots for Sherbrooke, while rookie Justin Blanchette stopped 23 in relief.
Sherbrooke hosts the Quebec Remparts Saturday afternoon at 4 pm in the teams’ first meeting of the season. The Remparts have lost their last two consecutive games, a shootout loss to Chicoutimi and a 6-0 loss to Shawinigan last Wednesday.
