Record Setting Day for Dumais in Shutout Win

This was Jordan Dumais’ day and there was no denying him as the Mooseheads star forward eclipsed the 20-year franchise points record previously held by Brandon Benedict. Dumais contributed three assists in a 4-0 shutout victory over the Cape Breton Eagles and Benedict was on hand to witness the historic moment as the Columbus draft pick set a new mark of 306 career points in front of more than 9,000 fans.
The top line of Dumais, Mathieu Cataford and Markus Vidicek accounted for all of the goal scoring while goalie Mathis Rousseau was unbeatable in making 36 saves for the shutout. Cataford and Vidicek had two goals and one assist each in Halifax’s eighth consecutive win to improve the record to 16-4-1 on the season.

Benedict played for the Mooseheads from 1998 to 2003 and posted 303 career points in his five seasons, accomplishing the feat in 343 games. Now the Head Coach and GM of the Valley Wildcats in the Maritime Hockey League, he was in attendance with his wife and children to witness the passing of the torch to a new generation. He was invited by the coaching staff to come to the dressing room postgame where he had a short speech in front of the team before presenting Dumais with a game puck and shaking his hand. The 19-year-old Dumais has been nothing short of prolific in his time in a Mooseheads jersey and surpassed Benedict’s record in an incredible 183 career games.
The win capped off a great weekend for the Moose as they won three-games-in-three days that started with a road victory in Saint John on Friday and also included a 4-1 defeat of Shawinigan on Saturday. The game marked the first time all season that Halifax had a complete and healthy roster at their disposal with the return of Liam Kilfoil from the World U17 Hockey Challenge. Logan Crosby was back on Saturday after missing 11 games with an upper body injury. There was some concern near the end of the game when Lou Levesque went down the tunnel with an apparent upper body injury and he was being reassessed after the game.

Other players chipping in with assists were Jake Furlong, Dylan MacKinnon and David Moravec. Cape Breton’s best chance to score came on a first period penalty shot, but Rousseau slammed the door shut on Angelo Fullerton after a hooking call on Dylan MacKinnon. There were no penalties called in the game oher than the hooking infraction.
The Mooseheads will take the week to prepare for a weekend road trip that includes stops in Charlottetown on Friday night and a visit to Acadie-Bathurst on Saturday.
