Remparts hold off Screaming Eagles to even series
SYDNEY – Despite a late push by Cape Breton, the Quebec Remparts held on for the victory, defeating the Screaming Eagles 6-5 at Centre 200 on Thursday.
Anthony Duclair, Jérome Verrier, Marcus Cuomo, Marc-Olivier Roy, Matt Murphy and Dmytro Timashov each netted goals for the Remparts.
Jacob Smith scored two goals while Clark Bishop, Stephen Anderson and Loïk Léveillé added single markers for the Screaming Eagles.
Cape Breton got the scoring started as Jacob Smith scored his first goal of the playoffs at 2:24 of the first period. Pierre-Luc Dubois and Jérémie Beaudin were given the assists.
The Remparts tied the game as Jonathan Deschamps turned the puck over to Anthony Duclair, who made no mistake beating Screaming Eagles goaltender Alexandre Bélanger on the five-hole at 4:19 of the opening frame. The goal was unassisted.
The Screaming Eagles regained the lead as Stephen Anderson found Smith all alone in front of the Quebec goal, notching his second goal of the game, second of the playoffs, at 7:39 of the first period. Anderson and Evgeny Svechnikov were given the helpers on the goal.
Quebec answered on the power play as Jérome Verrier buried his second goal of the playoffs at 8:59 of the first stanza. Nikolas Brouillard and Dmytro Timashov picked up the assists.
Marcus Cuomo gave the Remparts the lead at 10:46 of the first period as he banged home his second goal of the playoffs. Brouillard had the lone helper.
Cape Breton tied the game as Clark Bishop buried an Alexandre Gosselin rebound for his second goal of the playoffs at 12:39 of the opening period. Gosselin had the only assist on the goal.
Quebec took a 4-3 lead as Marc-Olivier Roy found the back of the net, ending Bélanger’s night, for his first goal of the playoffs at 3:56 of the second period. Vladimir Tkachev and Ryan Graves were awarded with the helpers.
Less than a minute, the Remparts made the score 5-3 as Matt Murphy’s shot fooled Screaming Eagles goaltender Miguel Sullivan for his first goal of the playoffs at 4:12 of the middle frame. Brouillard and Timashov added the assists.
The Screaming Eagles cut the Quebec lead to one as Stephen Anderson banged home a rebound for his first goal of the playoffs on the power play at 9:44 of the second period. Bradley Lalonde and Svechnikov were given credit with the helpers.
Quebec regained the two-goal lead as Timashov netted his first goal of the playoffs at 10:24 of the middle stanza. Graves had the lone assist on the goal.
Cape Breton cut the Remparts lead to one, but that’s as close as they would get, as Loïk Léveillé’s point shot beat Fucale at 13:45 of the third period. Bishop and Svechnikov picked up the helpers.
Fucale made 15 saves in the win for Quebec, his record improves to 1-1-0-0. Bélanger turned aside 12 of 16 shots before being replaced by Sullivan, who made 19 saves in his 34:59 of relief. Sullivan was tagged with the loss, his record falls to 1-1-0-0.
